Citlali Zuniga-Sanchez was raised with a love of music from an early age. But Citlali’s passion transcends music. She is pursuing a degree in Violin Performance and wants to return to Lancaster as a music teacher to share her love of music with the next generation of students. She credits her own music teachers for fueling this desire. As she puts it, “I feel like I am making a difference in each student’s lives as many of my music teachers did in mine.”
Citlali is the 2017 recipient of the Lancaster Performing Arts Center Foundation Scholarship, sponsored by the Choices in Learning National Foundation. A proud first-generation college student, she is using this scholarship to attend California State University San Diego. Her journey of lifelong learning illustrates the transformative power of education at the individual level and throughout society. It also reveals how investing in lifelong learning creates a multiplier effect—the gift of education to one becomes a gift of education to future students as well.
Citlali’s musical interests began when she was an elementary student living in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California. There, she would listen to her sister Karen play the violin. She would attend her concerts and she aspired to be like her sister. Unfortunately, when she moved to Lancaster, California the middle school she attended did not offer violin. Her love of music would not be hindered, however. She took up saxophone until high school when she could learn the violin.
A talented musician, Citlali relearned the instrument in high school. She also joined marching band and string orchestra. She graduated with an unweighted 4.0, was named a “Future Leader” by the Antelope Valley Press and was a 2016 AP Scholar with Honors.
She continues to succeed at San Diego State. She plays violin for the San Diego State Symphony Orchestra and was also asked to play in the upper level Chamber Orchestra. She has performed multiple concerts and loves her university experience. She describes the experience as “so much fun yet so much work.” She is prepared for the effort that is required to earn her degree and become a music teacher back home.
The Choices in Learning National Foundation’s singular mission is to promote lifelong learning. For this reason, the Foundation was honored to fund a $22,000 endowment to support the scholarship. Citlali is the first recipient of the Choices in endowment, having received a $5,000 per year scholarship. Two other deserving young artists also received $1,000 scholarships this year. Samantha Sprengelmeyer intends to enroll at Northern Colorado University in Theater, and Sarah Zhang is attending the University of California at Berkeley and studying opera and business.
